About Me

Designing for the web is truly where it's at. It's constantly changing and evolving in new and exciting ways. I love creating something beautiful that helps people tell their story.

My name is David Joyce. I was born and raised in East Tennessee. I developed an early appreciation for good design as I grew up using my father's Mac Plus. I developed an interest in designing for the web and pursued a technical degree. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Information Technology from East Tennessee State University. ETSU was one of only three institutions in the US that was accredited by ABET in the Information Technology concentration in 2007.

I've committed myself to designing for the web while maintaining web standards as best as I know how. So I've had to supplement much of my education with independent research into how to design properly using the standards set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium. It involves more than simply checking a site off in a validator, it's the core of what the internet is all about!

I think web design is a truly a unique medium that presents special challenges, and special advantages as well. I'm very excited to be in this field, working with what I love.

So I'm attempting to rethink both Exit42Design and this blog to make them more content friendly. My blog redesign will be the first step in that process and I thought I'd give you a sneak peak! It will employ a fluid grid and a jQuery image scaling plugin I'm developing.

  • Thoughts on My First Year Freelance Web Designing

I recently completed my first whole year of freelance web designing, and I thought I would share my experiences. When I first started, I was desperate for someone to tell me what exactly I should be doing to get started, but I couldn't find any blog entries about the topic. So I'll attempt to lay out all the nitty gritty details of how I run my business in the hopes that someone may find it useful.
